“The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.”
1 Timothy 6:10 (NLT)
Jesus flipped the script. In the Old Testament, material prosperity was often seen as a sign of God’s favor. In the New Testament, not so. Christ warns that wealth can blind us, enslave us, and even keep us out of the kingdom (Matthew 19:23–24).
I’ve written extensively on this subject in my Blessed Blog #2. If you want the full treatment, you can dig deeper below.
For now, a few piercing reminders:
✦ Greed isn’t just about money. The Oxford dictionary includes gluttony and lust. Greed is “always wanting more.”
✦ Greed breeds idolatry (Colossians 3:5).
✦ Greed blinds us to others’ needs (Luke 12:15).
✦ Greed destroys community.
✦ Greed twists justice.
✦ Swindling is greed weaponized through deceit (1 Corinthians 5:10–11).
✦ Sometimes it’s not just about ongoing harm, it’s about obedience to Christ (Matthew 10, 18; 1 Corinthians 5:10–13).
✦ Forgive yourself. Jesus frees us from slavery to more.
HOW SERIOUS IS THIS MATTER TO GOD?
Don’t even eat with those who claim Christ yet live in greed. (1 Corinthians 5:11–13, NLT)
👉 Greed is perhaps the Church’s most minimized sin.
Greed is not just a weakness—it is sin. Scripture calls it idolatry (Colossians 3:5). It’s the serpent’s oldest lie: “This will satisfy you.” But instead of giving life, it enslaves and blinds.
PRACTICE:
Ask God to reveal where money competes with Him in your heart. Take one tangible step toward trust and generosity this week.
PRAYER:
Lord, have mercy on us for our greed. Teach us to treasure You above riches,
to hold lightly what You entrust, and to give freely as You gave Yourself. Amen. Thank You. I love You.💖
