Let’s Talk About Sex

Did I get your attention? I’ll bet!
I’m so sorry to tell you there’s no version of Christianity that allows for sexual immorality. Just to clarify: No premarital sex. No extramarital sex. No porn. No unchecked fantasizing. No self-indulgence. No spouse-swapping or orgies. Not of the heterosexual or the homosexual variety. God considers all of it—every bit of it—outside of His will. Call it “love” all you like. God says it’s not. Jesus said pluck your eye out (Matthew 5:29).
Your body is precious, sacred, and not your own. It has been purchased by Christ’s blood and made to be a dwelling place for His Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
Remember: the snake said the fruit was good, and indeed it tasted sweet… but it saddled them with shame, separation, and trouble instead (Genesis 3:6–7, 10).
And by the way, married folks shouldn’t withhold sex from one another either (1 Corinthians 7:3–5). Of course, if the man is a lousy husband and father, or if the woman is a glutton or a shrew, it can impact desire for sure. Sin’s like that. Plus, allowances for real issues.
Mind you, some are not intended to marry and have been given the gift of celibacy (Matthew 19:11–12; 1 Corinthians 7:7). Jesus says that’s good.
For my friends in recovery, please note that Bill Wilson was intensely depressed for most of his sobriety. Like, three-weeks-in-a-dark-bedroom depressed. Was this because he had a chemical imbalance, or because he was a chronic womanizer who broke his devoted wife’s heart, carried shame for it, and never publicly confessed?
If we’re not aligned, we’re out of line and we suffer.
The first “sip” of any sin ensnares (Proverbs 5:22).
HOW SERIOUS IS THIS MATTER TO GOD?
“You are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin… Don’t even eat with such people. It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning. God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, ‘You must remove the evil person from among you.’”
— 1 Corinthians 5:11–13 (NLT)
WHAT IF GOD MEANS IT?
✦ Defiles God’s temple (1 Cor. 6:18–20)
✦ Separates from His presence (Isa. 59:2; Rom. 1:24–27)
✦ Becomes an idol (Col. 3:5)
✦ Blocks the kingdom (Gal. 5:19–21; 1 Cor. 6:9–10; Eph. 5:5)
No. Grace and Christ crucified isn’t license to ignore God. Grace is power to live differently, not permission to keep living the same way (Titus 2:11–12).
PRACTICE
What has sexual pleasure cost you? What has it delivered? What might God want to deliver you from so you can be fully free?
PRAYER
“Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.”
— Psalm 51:1–2 (NLT). Amen.
