When Calamity Strikes

When calamity strikes, in our own lives or on a global scale, we humans tend to look for human solutions. Sometimes, if not often, we place an unusual burden of expectation and unreasonable trust in mere mortals. After all, their power, wisdom, and resources are limited, and their motives are often terribly mixed, leaning heavily toward self, if not outright evil.

BTW, God doesn't like competition. He has a way of smooshing it.

Having faced an unusual number and intensity of challenges, I'm well-practiced in attempting to solve problems with my own strength. I'm intelligent, hard-working, resourceful, and energized by challenges. When aligned with God's will, I've accomplished more than I dared to expect. When I defied Him and blithely went my own way? Well, things went very badly.

It's only taken me 50-plus years to realize the best first step is to re/turn to almighty God.

As the sweet little kid song says, "He's got the whole world in His hands."

The question is, are we in His hands? Are we turning to Him first, foremost, and frequently with our problems?

Do we employ all of our legitimate, GOD-GIVEN resources in submission--yes, "submission"--to Him? This usually means serving others rather than for our own benefit, which in God's perfect economy, means we all benefit.

Do we recognize there is a God...and we're not it?

These B.C. verses from Isaiah remind us that God is God and there is only ONE. Isaiah tells us God brings both calamity and peace. Isaiah was writing to people who went way off track. Way, way off. Not unlike us.

We can find enormous comfort in that A.D. John 3:17, oft-overlooked, says, "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."

Let's re/turn to the One Who Has All Power to help us right this teetering vessel we call home.

PRAYER:

LORD, You are God, and there is no other. Forgive us for how we've made gods of people, places, and things that so obviously fail us. Help us humbly return to You. Save us from ourselves. In Christ's name, we ask it. Amen. Thank You. I love You.

I'm very grateful for your support. Every dime feels like love.
