✨ Day 9 of the 10 Days ✨— Complacency & The Lukewarm Church
These past days we’ve named the sins no one likes to talk about—the ones that tear us and our churches apart and keep us blind to God.
Of all of them, this one may be the most dangerous because it breeds everything else. Alongside greed, complacency is the American church’s blind spot. We are just too darn comfy. Jesus said it best:
“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see. I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.”
Revelation 3:15–19 (NLT)
The modern American church of virtually any denomination looks a lot like this, doesn’t it? Whether Jesus returns Friday at three or a decade from now, we don’t want to risk being spit out.
Good News
Christ ends this warning with love. His correction is proof of His mercy. Even in a culture of growing chaos—where God is being surgically removed from public life, and even from much of the church—His voice still calls. That means it’s not too late. If we listen and respond, He promises that those who overcome will sit with Him and reign.
I want to be on the winning team. Don’t you?
Reflect
✦ Have these Days of Awe exposed any areas of complacency in me?
✦ If Jesus came back tomorrow, would He find me lukewarm?
✦ Where is He nudging me to wake up and respond today?
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, King of the world, forgive us our comfortable complacency with Your priceless gift. Forgive our indifference to what You say is right and wrong. Apply the ointment of Your love so we can see, repent, and return to You. Thank You for Your mercy and grace. I love You. 💖
