Parables from the Printer

My printer warns me about running out of ink for a long time. I delay changing the cartridge, partly because I want to get every last smidgen out of the expensive thing—and partly because I don’t want to interrupt my work. If I’m honest, I have mild resentment toward the printer for warning me so early, long before the ink actually runs out.

My old printer used to fade gradually, which helped. Sometimes I didn’t notice until it was too late, and then I’d realize I didn’t have any cartridges on hand and would have to order them and wait. Inevitably, this seemed to happen when I most needed to print, turning the delay into a small panic.

My current printer is different. It doesn’t fade. It simply spits out a blank page. Of course, it isn’t really sudden—the printer has been warning me for weeks.

This time, having learned my lesson, I checked and realized I didn’t have replacement cartridges, so I ordered some. As of this moment, the printer is still printing. When the cartridges arrive, I’ll replace them promptly so it doesn’t become an emergency at a critical moment.

In Scripture, the author of Hebrews warns believers to respond when God speaks—whether calling them to connection, correction, or redirection. God’s voice is patient and gracious, but it is meant to be heeded.

When we choose to repeatedly ignore, dull, or resist that voice, something happens. The warnings may still be there…they may quiet to a whisper, inviting us to lean in closer or they may grow ever-louder in warning…but our hearts become less responsive, our ears deaf.

Lord, have mercy.🙏🏽

PRACTICE

Have I been ignoring God’s voice about something? What is it costing me?

PRAYER

God, please keep my ears and heart attuned to Your voice. Grant me the grace to respond honestly and promptly when You speak.

Thank You for Your love, kindness, and mercy.

I ask all this in Christ’s name. Amen.

Thank You. I love You. ❤️
