I was 14 when I went on my first hike at a sleepover camp in New Hampshire, climbing Mount Chocorua, which is quite strenuous for a novice, especially a bookish, artsy, non-athletic sort like me. I was literally in tears halfway up and the camp counselors and a few friendly campers encouraged me to keep on keeping on. I dug deep and persevered. It sure didn’t help when it started to pour.
You can imagine my grateful relief when the shelter appeared at the crest of the mountain. Once inside the rugged lean-to, I sat down, rested, and collected myself, finally enjoying the hard-earned accomplishment. When the rain stopped, we all emerged to soak up the spectacular view.
I didn’t know God then the way I do now, and today I can revisit my adventure in light of this verse. Life can be an arduous trail of ups and downs, treacherous slopes, and sudden downpours, with no apparent shelter in sight. We can slog our way through, fighting for every step, discouraged, and exposed to the elements.
Sometimes companions comfort and encourage us. Other times, we seem to be toiling alone.
Or we can dwell in God’s protective, sheltering presence 24/7, through triumphs and trials, carrying Him with us wherever we go, trusting the promise of respite, rewards, and a spectacular view.
PRAYER:
God, you promise rest, protection, and refuge if only we abide in You, hidden in Your shadow. Help us remain in this posture of dwelling in You, no matter the mountains, valleys, tough trails, and fabulous views we face day to day. In Christ’s name, we ask it. Thank You. I love You.💖
