Zeal You Don’t Feel

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.” Hebrews 13:15

As the world churns, spiritual warfare is intensifying, and the enemy is stepping up his slimy ways to prey on our weakness and tempt people away. The onslaught can beat us into retreat or defeat. Praying and worshipping God can feel forced, faked, and futile. DO IT ANYWAY, sacrificially, and let God pour out grace to revive you. He can and will. Don’t give up or in! Fake it to make it!

No need to shame, which only magnifies the discouragement. The apostles routinely went to this doubt-filled, dark place, even while Jesus strolled out on the water, napped, or showed up at supper, post-mortem!!! God kindly left us these examples to show us it would happen and to remind us He prevails. HE knows and loves us in our weakness.

Many times, I praise God spontaneously, an eruption of genuine gratitude, worship, and wonder at one of many minor and major miracles in my days.

Waking up unreasonably early, yet energized and inspired, soaring prayer times, uplifting encounters, unexpected gifts, problems solved effortlessly, a stunning skyscape on a euphoric morning run.

"Wow, God, you're amazing!" trips off my lips unbidden, my heart flooded with awe of God's goodness.

It happens a lot. Many days, really, I'm in a continuous state of grateful wonder and faith.

How quickly I can forget!

There are other times when praise, thanks, worship, indeed seem like a sacrifice—costly and conscious. Like yesterday, when an unexpected, menacing challenge blind-sided me. My thinking...and faith...started to race south of the border. Suddenly, God seemed AWOL. Prior miracles forgotten. I was instantly unplugged and unsettled.

I had a “faith relapse,” forgetting the God of the Universe loves me and is on the job 24/7. I sprang into action, trying to fix and figure out how to solve a problem that hadn’t even happened yet.

As I write this, I imagine the apostles bailing water and weeping in the storm on the Sea of Galilee.

This is the time to praise, pray, and worship God with zeal—or simply cry out, “Lord, save us!” we don’t feel until the onslaught shifts and we’re once again aware of God’s goodness and overcoming power. I’ve come to realize that these moments are an invitation to deeper faith, and a prompt to trust even when I’m not feeling it.

When we’re feeling disheartened or facing what seems like an insurmountable problem beyond our control, seek the God who eats problems for breakfast, and dwarfs the biggest mountains.

PRAYER:

Almighty God, you have all power. When it feels like there’s no point or path forward, help us to turn our eyes to you promptly, even if it feels like a costly sacrifice, trusting you’ll respond. In Christ’s name, I ask it. Amen! Thank you! I love you!
